Frequently Asked Questions Gas Furnace Heating

These are a few of the most frequently asked questions about Gas Furnace Heating (Central Heating). Please feel free to contact us if you don’t see your question answered below or need more complex questions answered.

Gas fired ducted furnace heaters work the same way as an air-conditioning indoor fan coil but don’t require the outdoor condenser. Heat is generated by the furnace and the internal fan pushes the heated air into your home via ducts and outlets in the floor space or ceiling area. Heat is produced and fed into the home and returned back to the furnace via a return air duct from inside the space, thus allowing the heater to only warm previously heated air and save on running costs. Gas Furnace heating is engineered to deliver the perfect balance of temperature and humidity in every room of your home. When compared to electric heating, the warmth from natural gas is not as drying and keeps you warmer in winter.

The system has three main parts – a heat exchanger, a combustion fan and a modulating gas valve. The furnace can be installed under the floor or within the ceiling space. Alternatively you can opt for an outdoor model that ducts into the home. Dual furnace heating systems with add-on cooling are also available. These systems provide the benefits of cooling in summer via an air-conditioning system and to gas fired heating in winter.

The efficiency of a furnace heating system is measured by its coefficient of performance (COP). This is a measure of two factors: the furnace output capacity (the amount of cold that will be removed by heating) and its energy consumption (the energy or natural gas the furnace uses per hour at rated capacity). The size and capacity of the unit you require depends on the size of the home you want to heat and its heat load, which is determined by environmental factors such as the number of windows, amount of sunlight entering the room, outside weather conditions and what type of insulation you have. Generally, the bigger the area you have to heat, the larger the unit you will need to service it. Our team will take all these factors into consideration when assessing your needs and recommending a unit appropriate for your home.

Furnace systems can be very cost efficient. Running costs have two components. Firstly, they require electricity to power the internal combustion fan and this cost is estimated to be 15% of an equivalent sized refrigerated air-conditioning systems’ power consumption. Secondly you will require a natural Gas or LPG Gas connection. Furnace heaters come in Low, Mid and High efficacy models. You will need to check the gas consumption per model and KW capacity against your Gas providers’ usage charges.

Energy costs can be further minimised with zoning and good quality control systems. If you only wish to warm certain areas of your home, zoning will reduce the fan speeds thus saving electricity and the gas consumption. Our team will take all these factors into consideration when assessing your needs and recommending a unit appropriate for your home, budget and life style.

Gas furnace heating is instantaneous and a suitable system will warm your home faster than an equivalent sized air-conditioner. The characteristics of gas fired warmth are undeniable for human comfort when measured against other heating systems and don’t have a dehydrating effect on your skin and eyes. In most cases gas fired energy consumption is cheaper to run than electric heating systems.

Your new gas furnace can be installed within a few days. Our team is mindful that your home is your castle and work towards minimising disruption. We will need to install ducts and grills but most of the work will be done under your floor or within the ceiling space. Gas connections will be taken care of and certified and all our work is guaranteed. We will leave your home clean and tidy, and most importantly warmer than we found it.

Just like air-conditioning systems there are many gas furnace heaters to choose from. We can price, procure and install any of the Lennox, Brivis, Braemar and Heatcraft brands and carry out warranty maintenance and repairs on all of them. Often price is an important consideration as is the usage a unit will require, so let us take you through the options that will best serve your needs.
